Step ()  When looking for a replacement spa pump follow these steps:
(a) Look for the label provided by the original electric motor manufacturer (Figure ) shows an "A.O.Smith" label indicating 230 Volts and Amps are 12.0/4.4 indicating 12.0 high and 4.4 low.
(b) Identify the voltage required (115 volts or 230 volts).
(c) Most motors operate at 1725 RPM for low speed and 3450 RPM for high speed.
(d) Identify the amperage and ALWAYS choose a replacement motor with the same or higher amperage on high speed.

Rebuilt Spa Pumps
It is not a good idea to rebuild the motors. New motors are not expensive and are safer then rebuilding an old spa motor or even a pool motor. Companies that rebuild hot tub motors, are not the original motor manufacturer. Most do not have the proper jigs to reassemble the motor with the proper concentricity between internal motor parts. Motors are also equipped with ON/OFF switches. If the switch is not well calibrated, it may generate a snubber network and that may cause nuisance tripping of the GFCI. Many spa owners have experienced GFCI nuisance tripping thinking it might be the spa heater or the spa control or even the GFCI itself. They start changing all these other spa parts until they realize it is the rebuilt motor. In addition, in the process of rebuilding the motor the thermo overload can be damaged, unless it is tested for overheating, no one would know that the thermo overload is damaged until the motor is burned and that may cause a fire in a portable hot tub.

Our G5 spa pump series is a direct replacement to all Executive 56 and our G4 spa pumps series are direct replacement to all Executive 48. Balboa Water Group is also an assembler of spa pumps. They purchased the line of spa pumps from Pentair Pumps. Years earlier Pentair Pumps purchased the Vico line of spa and hot tub pumps and later sold it to Balboa Direct also known as Balboa Water Group. Once again, the G5 and G4 series are replacement to all Vico pumps also known by their marketing name as Ultra-Jet pumps. Our wet ends and impellers for the G4 mount directly on the Ultra-Jet 48 frame motor and our G5 wet end mounts directly on the 56 frame motor.

Used Spa Pumps
Used spa pumps are usually a problem to purchase. There must be a reason why this used spa pump was rejected the first time. To properly test a used spa pump, a technician needs to load the pump to maximum water flow, measuring the amperage not to exceed 10% over the name plate amperage as specified by the motor manufacturer. The pump must run continuously for 6 hours without tripping thermo overload in a controlled ambient temperature of less than 50 degrees centigrade. To do all these tests it requires well calibrated and expensive instruments. In addition, and for safety reasons a dielectric test must be performed on the motor at 1500 volts to pass the 5mA measurement according UL 1081.
